Way before Blade and Black Panther, Spawn was the first minority comic book character to get his full-length feature.
McFarlane’s Spawn was adapted by HBO as an adult-themed anime series before it was turned into a live-action movie in 1997, starring Michael Jai White (above) as an assassin who sold his soul to the Devil and became its soldier. In August this year, Image will publish Spawn#300, making it the longest-running independent comic book in American history. His first post-Marvel offering, Spawn, came out in 1992. Together with a band of like-minded ex-Marvel artists, he started Image Comics. At the height of his career, McFarlane, sick of the bureaucratic practices and his bosses' reluctance to grant him more creative control, left Marvel. McFarlane once worked at Marvel Comics where he was responsible for reinventing the look of Spider-Man and co-creating Venom (with writer David Michelinie) in the late ̕80s and early ̕90s. No director is attached to the project, which will see Tom Hardy back as Eddie Brock (and his alien parasite-infected other half) and Woody Harrelson as his nemesis Carnage. A sequel is being developed, with Kelly Marcel, one of the screenwriters from the first movie, onboard to work on the script. Despite bad reviews (Rotten Tomatoes score: 29 per cent), Venom earned more than US$855 million (S$1.16 bil) worldwide, with a quarter of the bounty from China.
